No FICO? Homeownership May Still Be Possible

A limited or unavailable FICO score does not automatically end the path to homeownership. Depending on the program, lenders may evaluate housing history, alternative or non-traditional tradelines, co-signers, and the credit profile of other borrowers. Conventional financing may allow no-score borrowers with 12 months of housing history and a non-occupying co-signer. FHA requires at least one borrower to have a credit score, while no-score borrowers need three alternative tradelines and 12 months of housing history. VA financing requires at least one borrower with a minimum 620 score, three non-traditional tradelines for no-score borrowers, and does not permit gift funds.
